Czech (Austro-Hungarian) film director and actor. He directed more that 100 films, and acted in more than 60. Many of his films were adaptations from operettas. He worked throughout Europe, worked in New York, and also directed for television. His last full-length feature film was The Thief of Bagdad in 1952.

He was married to actress Anny Ondra in the 1930s, with whom he owned a production company. Their cooperation continued after their separation and Ondra married boxer Max Schmeling. He fled Germany for Belgium during the Nazi regime in 1940, and then went on foot to Paris. He then fled France for London.
