Honored Citizen, Civil War Veteran, and Fireman, Died Saturday Night

The death of Mr. Charles F. Schmidt, well known citizen civil war veteran and fireman, occurred at 9 o'clock Saturday night at his residence on north Jefferson street after a long illness with cancer of the stomach. Mr. Schmidt had been in failing health for over a years and for the past four weeks his condition had become critical and his death was not unexpected.

The decedent was 74 years of age and the 28th of last January. He was born at Stuttgart, Baden, Germany, and at the age of seven years he came to his adopted country with his parents and has been an honored resident since.

At the age of 16 years Mr. Schmidt enlisted in Co., F, 10th Ohio Battery, light artillery, as a bugler, after making three unsuccessful attempts to get into service. At the close of the war he came to Madison and has been a resident of his city since.

For over 50 years Mr. Schmidt was employed as an expect machinist in the Thos. Graham spoke factory. He was a fine mechanic and an industrious citizen but retired from active duty about seven years ago and has been living a life of ease since.

The deceased was a faithful member of St. Michael's Church all his life. He was a member of Bachman Post, G.A.R., and belonged to Walnut Street Fire Company. No. 4, being one of the oldest firemen in the city.
