Donald Gatemeier
Donald was born at Rudyard, Montana, to Edward and Anna Gatzemeier. He graduated with the Rudyard high school class of 1945.
His tragic death by drowning was received with profound shock by the many hi-line friends of the Gatzemeier family.
Donald attended church at Hingham that forenoon and met his death a few hours later while swimming with two younger brothers, Edward and Joe, in the reservoir on his father's farm in the Black Coulee area, 11 miles south of Rudyard. Seeing the dire distress of their brother Donald in the water and being unable to render direct assistance, the younger brothers summoned help at once. After two hours of frantic searching the body was recovered and all first aid applications failed to revive the prostrate form. A doctor and an ambulance from Havre were also summoned.
In addition to his parents, Donald is survived by his brother, Edward, Joe, and T/Sgt. Victor Gatzemeier, stationed with the army air forces at Santa Ana, California, and five sisters, Sister Clara Ann of Lafayette, Indiana; Mrs. Albert Eder of Rudyard, Hazel Gatzemeier of Havre, and Helen and Martha Gatzemeier of Rudyard.
