Martin R. Achterberg, 89, of Lexington, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Park Avenue Estates in Lexington.
He was born February 18, 1923, south of Oconto, Nebraska on the home place to Carl and Ida (Camin) Achterberg. He attended school at rural District #217. Martin was married to Bonny Estergard on April 12, 1956, at First Lutheran Church at Buffalo.
The couple farmed near Oconto until 2006, when they moved to Park Avenue Estates in Lexington. Martin enjoyed his life on the farm, planting the seeds in the spring and harvesting in the fall.
Martin, as we grew older, looked forward to rides in the country and keeping track of the corn each season. Martin was a faithful member of First Lutheran Church at Buffalo.
Survivors include one brother: Melvin Achterberg of Oconto, Nebraska: two sister-in-laws: Mary Achterberg of Amherst, Nebraska; and Gayle Estergard of Callaway, Nebraska, one brother-in-law: Bob Jarvis of Omaha, Nebraska, ten nephews: Dale (Shirley) Estergard of Callaway, Nebraska, Lynn Estergard of Oconto, Nebraska, Ronnie Estergard of Washington state, Vaughn (Karen) Helberg of Lincoln, Nebraska, Richard (Cyndi Lou) Estergard and Alan (Kelly) Estergard both of Callaway, Nebraska, Brent Estergard of Denver, Colorado, Dale (Cinda) Hladky of Cozad, Nebraska; Larry (Shelly) Achterberg of Amherst, Nebraska; and Jason Achterberg of Amherst, Nebraska; thirteen nieces: Anita (Marvin) Smith of Callaway, Nebraska; Carol (Dean) Spangler of Oconto, Nebraska, Judy (Allen) Meredith of Callaway, Nebraska, Donna Lea (Gary) Glendy and Jerri (Rich) Maxwell both of Broken Bow, Nebraska; Pat (Jim) Hoblyn of Ansley, Nebraska, Nancy (Larry) Miller; of Lemoyne, Nebraska, Diane (Ken) Mahoney of Roseland, Nebraska, Connie (Gary) Martin and Kristi Hawkins both of Omaha, Nebraska, Wendy Cooke of Cocoa Beach, Florida, Sue (Leonard) May of Lexington, Nebraska; Cleone Flandermayer of Evansville, Indiana; numerous grand-nephews and grand-nieces, extended family and friends.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonny; four brothers, Herman, Walter, Ben and John, and three sisters, Martha Winters, Lena Hladky and Anna Bihr.
Funeral Services will be Monday, October 8, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church at Buffalo with Reverend Victor Rasmussen officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery near Oconto, Nebraska.
Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington is in charge of arrangements.
