Aloysius J. "Red" Bieker, 82, Chanute, formerly of Hays, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at Harry Hynes Hospice Center in Wichita. He was born Nov. 6, 1926, in Hays to Nick and Pauline Boos Bieker.

He was a fire fighter and fire chief in Hays in the 1950s and 1960s. He became fire chief at the Osawatomie State Hospital in the late 1960s and early 1970s before becoming a State Fire Marshal. After his retirement as a State Fire Marshal he resided in Chanute with his companion.

Survivors include his ex-wife, Norma Bieker, Auburn; three sons, Norman Bieker, Gardner, Bob Bieker, Olathe, and Jim Bieker, Topeka; two daughters, Alice Berens, Wamego, and Wilma Craft, Atlanta, Ga.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; his long-time companion and her family, Jewell I. Dobkins, Chanute; a son, Marvin Dobkins; a daughter, Wilma Holsinger; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, William Bieker; a daughter, Mary Bieker; a brother, Paul A. Bieker; a sister, Martina Klaus; and a stepson, Robert Dobkins.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Brock's North Hill Chapel, 2509 Vine, Hays. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery under the direction of Keithley Funeral Chapels, Hays. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today and from 12:30 p.m. until the service time Friday.
