School Sister of Notre Dame Mary Eric Militzer died June 14, 2012, at Season's Hospice, Waukesha, Wis. She was 93.
Sister Mary Eric was born on November 14, 1918 in Milwaukee, to Erich and Elizabeth (née Roetto) Militzer, and was baptized Gertrude at St. Michael's Church in Milwaukee. She had one sibling, her older sister, Hildegard.
For most of her elementary school years, Gertrude attended St. Boniface School, Milwaukee and graduated from eighth grade there at age 13. She was awarded a two-year scholarship at St. John's Cathedral High School, Milwaukee. While a freshman, she felt a strong desire to enter the convent. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame as a junior candidate in 1933, at age 14 and completed her high school studies at the motherhouse in Milwaukee. She professed her first vows on July 28, 1938. She received a bachelor of science in education from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee in 1950 and a master of arts in education, guidance and counseling from Marquette University, Milwaukee in 1968.
Sister Mary Eric served as a teacher and musician for 31 years prior to being called to roles as school administrator, director of instructional television, provincial councilor and director of development. She was one of seven pioneer SSNDs who were sent as missionaries to teach on the island of Guam on August 10, 1949. Her ministry locations included St. Anne, Milwaukee, 1936-37; St. Francis Xavier, DePere, Wis., 1938-46; St. Mary, Kickapoo, Ill.; St. Francis, Yona, Guam, 1949-1960; San Vicente, Barrigada, Guam, 1960-64; Messmer High School, Milwaukee, 1964-1968; Archdiocese of Milwaukee Instructional Television, 1968-74; Archdiocese of Chicago Instructional Television, 1974-79; two terms as councilor for the SSND Provincial Council in Mequon, 1979-83 and in
Milwaukee, 1983-87; and director of SSND Province Development Ministry, Milwaukee, 1987-1992. Sister Mary Eric "retired" in 1992, but continued to serve – responding to needs and generously sharing her organizational skills and many talents until she moved to Notre Dame of Elm Grove in 2011, where she ministered through prayer and presence.
Sister Mary Eric is survived by her sister, Hildegard Gigl, nieces and nephews: Grace (Jim) Fabisch, Jim (Deb) Gigl, Tom (Diane)Gigl, Bob (Marta) Gigl, Joan Gigl (Reuben Bankier), grandnieces and nephews, great-grandnieces, other relatives, friends and the SSND Community.
