Vonda Steilen, 81, Mitchell, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 4, 2008, 10:30 AM at the Saint John Neumann Catholic Church in Farmer. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Spencer. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Friday evening at the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bittner Funeral Chapel.
Vonda Elaine Steilen was born to Albert and Hazel (Abbott) Klenke on January 15, 1927 in Spencer, SD. She attended school in Spencer and graduated from Spencer High School in 1945. She married Wilfred Steilen on January 8, 1948 at Saint Peter's Catholic Church in Farmer, SD. They farmed near Farmer and later moved to Spencer. She was employed by Saint Joseph Hospital for a number of years. Wilfred died in 1973. Vonda moved to Mitchell in 1997.
She was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and previously volunteered at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.
Vonda is survived by one daughter, Betty and her husband, Dick Anderson, Mitchell, SD and one son, Dale and his wife, Lucy, Huron, SD; seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred in 1973; one brother, Dwight Klenke and her parents.
