Michael was the son of Jacob (died before 1903) and Regina (Rusch) Doberstein. He came to the U.S. from Poland in 1884 and settled in Durham, Kansas, where he worked as a blacksmith. In 1890 he married Eva Penner, who immigrated from Poland two years before. While in Kansas they had five children:

1. Henry (1891-1971), m. Clara Behlen (1891-1972)
2. Harry (1892-1900), died of diphtheria
3. Pearl (1894-1900), died of diphtheria a week after Harry
4. Elsa (1896-1982), m. Rudolph Penner (1893-1963) (Not related to Eva)
5. Reuben (1898-1898), died at 17 days old.

About 1898 the family moved to what is now Deep Creek Township, Major County, Oklahoma. There they had five more children:

6. Alvin (1899-1982), m. Leona Kellogg (1905-1984)
7. Olga (1901-1988), m. Marcellus Glassbrooke (1903-1963)

[Please note: Michael and Eva's daughter Olga was born in Oklahoma in 1901. A year later in Poland an Olga Dobberstein was born (Find A Grave Memorial# 177744627) and her parents were Daniel and Amanda (maiden name unknown) Dobberstein. Some people have confused the two.]

8. David (1902-1990), m. 1st Frances Thompson (1909-1934), m. 2nd Eleanor Robinson (1912-2007)
9. Theodore (1904-1975), m. Margaret Guinnur (1912-?)
10. Bertha (1906-1914), died of scarlet fever.

By 1910 the family had moved to Fresno, CA, where Micheal and Eva spent the rest of their lives. Michael worked as a blacksmith and farmer until he died of heart failure in 1934.
