Lizzie was the fifth of ten children born to Carl and Rose Mehr in Saskatchewan, Canada, on December 26, 1916. She married Ben Felsterman in the mid-1930s, and after her mother Rose died in 1937, Lizzie often played mother to her younger siblings, taking both Gabe and Irene into the home she shared with Ben and their four children (son Arnold passed away as a child). Lizzie passed away in Mission, British Columbia, in 1986.

Lizzie was predeceased by both parents, husband Ben, son Arnold, and sisters Catherine Sarauer, Collette Koenig, Marie Bernhardt and Irene Hollermann. She was survived by one son and two daughters as well as two brothers (Harold and Fred, who have both since passed) and two sisters (one of whom, Alice, passed in 2012).
