Edward Byers Johnson, 78, of 711 N. Washington Street, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.

Mr. Johnson was born in Cleveland County on May 19, 1931, to the late Thad Rochelle Johnson and Madge Richards Johnson. He retired from Martin Motor Lines as a truck driver. He served in the US Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Thelma Towery Johnson; five sons, Michael Johnson and wife, Annette, of Shelby, Tim Johnson and former wife, Linda Griffin, of Shelby, Terry Johnson and wife, Gina, of Shelby, Danny Johnson and wife, Carolyn, of Shelby and Mark Johnson and wife, Peggy, of Shelby; daughter, Kim Johnson of Shelby; two brothers, Bob Johnson of Golden Valley and Larry Johnson of Morganton; three sisters, Linda Faulkenbury of Concord, Carolyn Johnson of Morganton and Shirley Johnson of Concord; step-sister, Brenda Hollifield and husband, Billy, of Shelby; nine grandchildren, Wesley Lawson and wife, Julie, Brandon Lawson and wife, Jolee, Andrea Ledbetter and husband, Stephen, Christopher Johnson, Steve Lynch and wife, Megan, Brittany Edmunds and husband, Clint, Brian Johnson, Bret Johnson and Brandon Hernandez; and three great-grandchildren, Dalton Lawson, Paige Lawson and Aubrey Grace Lynch.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Wednesday, Oct. 28, 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Stamey Funeral Home.

Funeral: Thursday, Oct. 29, 2 p.m., Stamey Funeral Home Chapel, Fallston
