ELDRIDGE, Iowa — Charles Thomas Muhs III, 57, Eldridge, Iowa, died Monday morning, September 8, 2008, at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme, Davenport.
He was born November 29, 1950, in Clinton, Iowa, to Charles and Melba (Carlsen) Muhs. Charlie was a 1969 graduate of Central Community Schools, DeWitt. He was active in scouting and attained the rank of a Bronze Eagle Palm through the Eagle Scout program. Charlie attended the University of Iowa for five years, studying geology. He worked at Sears Manufacturing and JI Case in Rock Island. He graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy at Camp Dodge, Iowa. Charlie began working for the Scott County Sheriff's Office in 1985, where he continued to work until his untimely death. During his time with the sheriff's office, he served as a member of the SWAT Team and Metropolitan Enforcement Group. Charlie was currently a patrol sergeant, head of the honor guard and a master scuba diver.
Charlie was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast and president of the Iowa I Chapter of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Group. He loved to work outdoors in his garden and enjoyed collecting rocks and watching programs on the History Channel. Charlie was always up for a good game of Trivial Pursuit with his friends and family whom he would always beat.
Surviving are a son, Jason Olmstead Muhs and his wife, Sara, Cedar Rapids; grandsons, Connor and Cian Olmstead; a sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Mark Serfling, Cresco, Iowa; his fiancée, Lisa Petty; a step-son, Luke Petty, Eldridge; two nephews and a niece, Shane (Jodi) Serfling, Tony Serfling and Andrea Serfling; other relatives and many friends.
Preceding Charlie in death were his parents and an infant sister, Mary Ann Muhs.
Burial in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
An honor guard provided by the Scott County Sheriff's Office.
