Sadie Jane Effron Cahn

LANTANA, FL - Sadie Jane Effron Cahn, a long time Beacon resident, passed away July 4, 2012 in her home in Lantana, Florida at the age of 101. Mrs. Cahn was the wife of the late Dr. Simon Cahn, a well known Beacon dentist who predeceased her at the age of 78 in 1983.

Mrs. Cahn was born in Poughkeepsie, NY and was the daughter of Samuel and Fannie Effron. She graduated Poughkeepsie High in 1929 and Vassar College in 1933 and married Dr. Cahn in 1937. For close to 45 years, she assisted her husband in his dental practice. [Survivors have been omitted by the contributor]
A second son, Richard Elliott Cahn, died in 1956 at the age of 17 from polio. The funeral is scheduled for noon on Sunday July 8th at the Beacon Hebrew Alliance to be followed by the burial at the synagogue's cemetery in Fishkill.

Mrs. Cahn resided for 74 years at her Beacon home oat 847 Wolcott Avenue across from St. Luke's. Over the years, she was involved with and donated actively to many organizations. She endowed in perpetuity an ongoing scholarship in the name of her deceased son Richard Elliott Cahn, available for a Beacon High School graduate attending Vassar College. She was a supporter of many not-for-profits in the Hudson Valley including Beacon Hebrew Alliance, Poughkeepsie Jewish Community Center, Highland Library, Vassar College (she was the oldest living alumna), Mt. St. Mary's College, and United Jewish Appeal. She was a past director of the former Highland Hospital, past President of the Sisterhood of the Beacon Hebrew Alliance, and a Director of the Fishkill National Bank (now M&T). When Sadie retired from the board of the bank, then President Jeff Cunningham remarked that "she was the best new business person the bank had." She was a life member of both the Southern Dutchess County Club and the Beacon Hebrew Alliance, the latter which honored her on her 100th birthday by dedicating a flower garden in her name. She was a former honoree by the Mid-Hudson region of State of Israel Bonds at their annual dinner.

She was predeceased by siblings including William Effron, Robert Effron, Estelle Dobo and Eva Acker, all from Poughkeepsie and Esther Duker. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor can be made to the Beacon Hebrew Alliance, 331 Verplanck Avenue, Beacon NY 12508.
