SOUTH BEND - James Purchas, 88, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on July 10, 2012 in his home. He was born on May 25, 1924 to Lorenzo Purchas and Emma Tuberville, in Pulaski, Illinois. He completed his education in the Pulaski, Illinois school system. He enjoyed the outdoors; his favorite hobbies included fishing and hunting. He loved to spend time with his family and friends and took pride in his garden (vegetables being his specialty). He was employed by various companies for more than 20 years as a cement mason. He became an individual contractor after retiring from general labor.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Helen (Shines) Purchas; two daughters: Pastor Doris (Pastor Samuel) Lynch and Penny Hill; two sisters: Loretta (Purchas) Ware and Lorraine Purchas; dear nephew, Johnny Shines; dear nieces: Mary (Henry) Barnes, Helen Bowens and Jacqueline (George) Brown; grandchildren: Darlene Bailey, Monica Lynch, Robbin Purchas and Rico Purchas; great-grandchildren: Shaquesha Bailey, Jalon Purchas and Rosalind Purchas; great-great grandchildren: Jada Purchas, Jania Purchas, Javion Purchas, Jabaar Purchas; and a special family friend, Tara (Barnes) Nelson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lorenzo Purchas; his mother, Emma Tuberville; and two sisters: Naomi Schoffner, Lynell Woodly; and a grandson, Ryan Hill. Special thanks to all of the caregivers who took time out to care for our beloved James: Hospice of St. Joseph County staff and Dr. Ebony Davis; family members: Terry (Burnette) Ivory, Monica Lynch; assistant caregivers: Paige Barnes and Kennedy Barnes; family friends: Linda and Sonny Bell.
