Arthur Gilbert Olson was born to Clarence and Esther (Leininger) Olson on November 14, 1921 in Griggs County near Binford, ND, where he grew up and attended schools.
He entered the Army in 1940 and served in the European Middle Eastern Theatre. He received the Purple Heart at Anzio, near Rome, Italy while serving with the Third Infantry Division.
Arthur married Dolly Prescott June 21, 1944 at Ft. Sill, OK. Following Arthur's discharge in 1945, the couple settled at McHenry, ND, where they farmed and he was a rural mail carrier. In McHenry, he served as fire chief, helped operate the movie theater and was active in the American Legion as color guard commander and served as treasurer and president of the McHenry School Board.
His beloved wife and lifelong partner, Dolly, died of cancer in 1974. Arthur was a rural mail carrier in Wheatland and Casselton, ND until 1981 when he retired and moved to West Fargo, where he built his own home. In West Fargo he was active in the VFW as a color guard commander and Seam Squirrel commander. He enjoyed his family and friends, woodworking, playing pool and dancing.
He is survived by two sons, Malory M. (Deb), West Fargo, ND, Alfred G. (Phyllis), Casselton, ND; two daughters, Rita (Larry) Halvorson, Binford, ND, Ardell (Gordon) Graner, Bolivia, South America; four brothers, Robert (Goldie) and Melvin (Norma), both West Fargo, Donald (Helen), Moorhead, MN, Richard (Carol), Hawley, MN; three sisters, Gloris (Elmer) Gronneberg, Cooperstown, ND, Avis Sather and Linda Wendlick, both Fargo; two brothers-in-law, Bernie Wieland, Don Nelson; a sister-in-law, Delores Olson; ten grandchildren, Heather (Cory) Fehr, Canada; Tory (Tanya) Halvorson, Iowa; Ryan Stahl, Fargo, ND; Jenny, Samuel, and Hannah Graner, Bolivia, South America; Nathan, and Kelsey Olson, West Fargo, ND; Tyler and Nicole Radermacher, Casselton, ND; and two great grandchildren, Hunter and Makaya Halvorson, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dolly; son, Larry; two daughters, Alesa and Patsey; brother, Carl; two sisters, Irene and Esther and a brother-in-law, Roger Sather.
Visitation: Tuesday from 5 to 7 in the Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Chapel in Cooperstown, ND, with a prayer service at 7.
Funeral: Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 11 in Faith Lutheran Church, West Fargo, ND with visitation one hour before the service.
Burial: Thursday, March 17 at 11 in the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, McHenry, ND.
