Robert Montgomery passed away July 16, 2012. He was born outside Salem, Ore. Oct. 29, 1929 to Harvey and Nona Marie Montgomery and they came to Bozeman when he was two months old.

After attending grade schools in Bozeman and high school in Lima, he joined the U.S. Army and was send to Germany to the 778th Tank Battalion and later on to the U.S. Constabulary. While stationed in Germany on the Czechoslovakian border he met Elisabeth Kern and they were married in Sonthofen, Germany on Nov. 27, 1948. Elizabeth returned to Bozeman with him as a war bride and they settled in Bozeman.

Bob secured a job with the Montana National Guard as an Admin-Supply and Maint Tech, but in 1953 he chose to continue his military career and entered into active duty at Ft. Ord, Calif. He then transferred to the 10th Mountain Division and deployed to Germany for a three-year tour. Upon return to the states for a short time he was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. After four months in Hawaii he was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer and assigned to the 14th Infantry. In 1963 he returned to Ft. Benning, Ga. to the 11th Air Assault Division/1st Calvary Division and they deployed to Vietnam in 1965. After a one-year tour in Vietnam he was sent to Ft. Richardson, Alaska for two years and then did another one-year service in Vietnam.

In 1971 he retired from military service with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer and he and his wife returned to Bozeman. His employment after retirement was with Gallatin County as Constable, Coast to Coast, and Owenhouse Ace Hardware.

Bob is survived by his wife, Elisabeth; brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Betty Baker of Helena, Mont.; nieces, Sharon and Barbara, nephew, Rick and their families; and a step-sister, Linda of Billings, Mont.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, July 19, 2012 at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Family and friends to meet at Dahl Funeral Chapel at 12:45 p.m. to process to the cemetery.
