During World War Two, he took part in the invasions of Poland, France, and Russia.
He was in Berlin as head of the Panzer division defenses to protect the city and Hitler from the Soviets. His command was in the Führerbunker and he left the bunker on May 2nd, 1945 (two days after Hitler committed suicide) and was captured by the Soviet army.
In 1952, a Soviet military tribunal in Moscow sentenced Weidling to 25 years of imprisonment for not surrendering Berlin sooner.
Helmuth Otto Ludwig Weidling died three years later on November 17th.
