George Anton Sommer was born to George Sommer and his wife 4 Aug 1854 in Bavaria. He arrived in the US abt. 1870-71 coming through Castle Garden. He boarded with the O'Rourke family where he med Katie. He married Katie Elizabeth O'Rorke in 1877 and together they had 5 children: Mary Elizabeth, George H., Agnes Josephine, Frances Marie and Walter. He became a naturalized citizen on 5 Oct 1880 in Brooklyn. A carpenter and cabinet maker by trade, he had the mind of an inventor and renaissance man. He held a patent on a ladder which he later manufactured with his son George in Brooklyn. His curious mind never stopped and he never stopped tinkering with things, recording the phases of the moon, constellations and experimenting with mirrored images and movement. In 1926, Katie bought a house in Milford, CT to be closer to their only grandchild, George Sommer Nolan. George Anton quickly set upon modernizing the 1820 Milford home by adding a circular staircase as second means of egress. When his son-in-law, James Nolan died in 1933, his daughter Agnes and grandson George Nolan moved into the house. George Anton Sommer died on 30 Mar 1935 at age 80. He was buried on 2 Apr 1935 in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn.
