Herman Frank Stender,Jr was born to Herman Frank Stender Sr and Swanna Lee Jones Stender 10/8/1913, in their mountain home above Hot Springs, Arkansas. His father rode his horse down to Hot Springs to open the restaurant July 20, 1917, and never returned. His mother loaded all five children up in the wagon and returned to her native NC home, placing four of the children in the Oxford Orphanage 10/16/1919, and the fifth child with her sister. Herman died 2/17/1920 during an outbreak of measles and influenza with his mother by his side. His funeral was conducted by Rev. J.D. Harte. The Orphanage described him as "Was in 1st Grade- a good boy - obedient."
