William Thomas Gast Lucas, 55, of Florence, died Aug. 16, 2006.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, William Gast and Elizabeth Wood Lucas.

Bill was born in and lived in Russellville until 1998 when he relocated to Florence to serve as president of the northwest region of Colonial Bank, and most recently as senior vice president of Bank Independent.

Bill worked for Grissom Motor Co. in Russellville from 1973 until 1979. He then began his career with First National Bank in Russellville, which later became Colonial Bank and Bank Independent.

Throughout his career, he served as the charter president of the Russellville Kiwanis Club; president of the Russellville Area Chamber of Commerce; state board member of the Leukemia Society of America; board member of the Franklin County Chapter of the American Cancer Society; board member of the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America; board chairman of the Russellville Parks and Recreation Board; board member of the Russellville Industrial Development Board; vice chairman of the Shoals Area Chamber of Commerce; board member of Safeplace; board member of Northwest-Shoals Community College Foundation; president's cabinet of the University of North Alabama; board member of the Shoals Economic Development Authority; administrative board of First United Methodist Churches of Russellville and Florence; board member of the Franklin County Juvenile Advisory Council; board member of Colonial Bank; Outstanding Young Men of America -- 1983; named Franklin County "Boss of the Year" in 1989.

Bill is a 1973 graduate of the University of Alabama; the American Bankers Association Consumer Lending School at the University of Oklahoma, American Bankers Association Supervisory School at the University of Southwestern Louisiana; the Pat Ryan School of Finance and Insurance in Chicago, Ill.; and was an instructor of the American Institute of Banking.

Bill is survived by his wife of 34 years, Teresa Brewer Lucas; daughter, Elizabeth Lucas Wilson and husband, David, of Nashville; daughter, Emma Key Gast Lucas, of Florence; sister, Emma Lucas Kingston and husband, Walter, of Naples, Fla.; and sister, Ruth Lucas Grissom, of Russellville.

Pallbearers are Joe Porter, Zackie Bradford, Bob Rogers, Phillip Wade, Buzz McKinney, Jack Clayton, Doug Allen and Steve Hammack.

Honorary pallbearers are James Megar, Tommy Darby, Brad Reeves, Larry Thornton, Frank Seay, David Jones, Gene Carbine, Tinker Malone, Johnny McReynolds, Sherrill McNeil, Macke Mauldin, Rex Pinkard, Jimmy Weatherford, Leonard Allen, Roger Bedford Jr., Barry Hargett and Tim Malone.

Visitation was Thursday at Pinkard Funeral Home in Russellville from 4:30-9 p.m. The body will lie in state at First United Methodist Church in Florence from 12:30-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, with the celebration of life immediately following at 2 p.m. Burial at Knights of Pythias Cemetery, Russellville, Ala.
