Jean Irene Silverstrand, 77, of McPherson, died at 10:25 p.m., Tuesday, July 17th, 2012 peacefully at Pine Village, Moundridge, Kansas.

Jean Irene Silverstrand, the daughter of Henry and Daisy E. (Wylie) Oltmanns, was born September 13, 1934 at Moundridge, Kansas. She was one of four children born to this union, two sons and two daughters, John, Jean, Bob, and Ann. Growing up in the thirty's wasn't easy for anyone and everyone had to pull their own weight to help out the family. Jean attended the Moundridge grade schools and graduated from Moundridge High School, Moundridge, Kansas. Following her graduation, Jean attended Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia, Kansas. She worked her way through college as a nanny for several families while completing and receiving her teaching degree. It was during this time at Emporia that she meet the man she would later marry. Through the years she continued her education and received her Masters degree. Jean moved back home to Moundridge, Kansas and began teaching the first grade at Faris Elementary School in Hutchinson, Kansas traveling back and forth.

Jean was united in marriage to William M. "Bill" Silverstrand on June 10, 1970 at Hutchinson, Kansas. The couple established their first home together in Newton, Iowa where Jean continued teaching in the first grade and retired after 13 years. Although Jean quit teaching, she really never quit teaching. She continued teaching through her whole life and was known as a natural teacher. They say you can take the teacher out of the school, but you can never take the school out of the teacher. She so loved her students, that she quite often called them her kids! Jean and Bill moved to McPherson, Kansas in 1992 where they joined the St. Joseph's Catholic Church where she served on the Altar Society and served as president. She was also active with and served as past president of Church Women United.

Jean was a Christian, loving and devoted wife, sister, aunt, teacher, and good friend. Her wise counsel, gentle guidance, abilities to teach naturally, and gracious smile will be missed by those who knew and loved her. Jean enjoyed spending time with the McPherson Quilt Guild and she served as president and was on the board of KQO. She taught quilting classes for the Button Hole and was an avid quilter.

Surviving family members include her loving and devoted husband of over forty-two years; her sister Ann Storer of Moundridge, Kansas, her brothers John Oltmanns and his wife Pat of Wichita, Kansas and Bob Oltmanns and his wife Ruth of Moundridge, Kansas; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
