Sarah Kathryn "Katie" Messenger of Huntsville passed away Thursday in San Antonio at the age of 86.
Katie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert, to whom she was married for 52 years. They met on a blind date and when he proposed in 1945, Bob promised to show her the world. They lived a rich and amazing life during his career as an Air Force pilot, living in Japan, Germany, and five different states before settling in Huntsville in 1971.
She and Bob loved to bowl, play golf (she had two holes-in-one to her credit), and play bridge. She continued to be a much sought after bridge player for many years after she was widowed and was always asked to bring her delicious deviled eggs to functions. She was an active participant in the Weatherly Heights Baptist Church and the Widows Support Group. She was an awesome mother, an adoring grandmother and great-grandmother, and a wonderful friend...she always had a kind word for everyone and was a true personification of a "Southern lady."
Katie was born on May 28, 1923, in Decatur, the youngest and last survivor of Joe B. and Lillie Trotman's 11 children. She and Bob had three children, Brenda McCain in San Antonio, James of Marietta, Ga., and Donald of Niceville, Fla.; six grandchildren, Matthew and Kathryn (Katie like her Memaw) McCain, Lindsay, Skyler, Tristan, and Madison Messenger; and five great-grandchildren, Liam, Mackenzie, and Lucas McCain, Keya Grigsby, and Aiden Messenger.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Laughlin Services Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel with Dr. David B. Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
Flowers may be sent or memorials may be made in her honor to the charity of your choice.
