Rev. John Samuel Rasnake, Th.D., age 80, passed away on August 6, 2012, at Wilcox Hall, Holston Valley Medical Center. Mr. Rasnake, a veteran of the Korean War, was born in Clinchfield, Virginia, on July 6, 1932.

A native of Russell County, Virginia, Mr. Rasnake was the son of the late John Ezra and Golda Ball Rasnake.

He is preceded in death by his siblings, William E. Rasnake, Fred Edgar Rasnake, and Marilee Rasnake Trivette(8490675).

He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Gray Smith Rasnake, of Bristol, one son, John Samuel Rasnake, II, and his wife Mary, of Bluff City, one daughter, Tondaleah Rasnake Ollis, and her husband Max, of Bristol; four grandchildren, Jordannah Rasnake Peters, and her husband Derek, of Bluff City, Ryan Rasnake, and his wife Lindsey, of Bristol, Ian Ollis, and Meah Ollis, both of Bristol, one great-grandchild, Alanah Mae Peters, of Bluff City, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Rasnake, a graduate of Southeastern University, Florida Southern College, East Tennessee State University, and International Seminary, always preferred to be known as Pastor Sam, a title he loved. He was a minister of the Assemblies of God for fifty-nine years, and during that time pastored four churches: Avon Assembly (Avon, North Carolina), South Bristol, Westhighlands Church (both in Bristol, Tennessee), and Franklin Chapel (Blountville, Tennessee). He also served as an Executive Presbyter of the Tennessee District of the Assemblies of God for a decade. An educator with the Sullivan County schools for thirty-one years, he was appointed by Congressman James Quillen to We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, a national organization chaired by Chief Justice Warren Burger, retired, and served as an educational liaison to the committee for ten years.

The family will receive friends on August 9th, from 5:30-8:00 P.M., at Franklin Chapel, 221 Franklin Drive, in Blountville. The funeral service, at 7 P.M. on August 10th at Franklin Chapel, will be conducted by Rev. Herbert Peak, Jr., Rev. J. Douglas Cruey, and John Samuel Rasnake, II, followed by interment in the Mountain View Mausoleum in Bristol, Virginia, on August 11th at 11 A.M.

Pallbearers are Brock Nash, Ian Ollis, Marty Ollis, Max Ollis, Derek Peters, Roger Rasnake, Ryan Rasnake, and Dean Smith.

Honorary Pallbearers and Special Friends include John P. Lawson, Rev. Ed Smith, Dr. Jennifer Skorupa, Dr. Mary Rouse, Bonnie Snyder, Lloyd Marsh, Maury Davis, Tennessee Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey, Dr. Fred Guthrie, Dr. David Astin, Dr. James Herman, and Dr. Marco DaSilva.
