Suggested edit: BARTEL E. EBEL

Bartel E. Ebel, son of Edward and Anna Dorn Ebel, was born January 20, 1884, in a Mennonite village in Russia and with his parents came to the United States just several months later. His parents settled in Hillsboro, Kansas, where his father was in business. At the age of eleven his father died and the family moved to a farm southeast of Hillsboro.

As a child he attended elementary schools in and around Hillsboro and was graduated from Hillsboro High School. It was here as a young man during a revival campaign that he made his commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and became a member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church in 1902. Later while studying at Harvard University he pastored a Baptist Church in Boston, Massachusetts, and was ordained as a minister.

In 1908 he was married to Katherine Hiebert, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Cornelius Hiebert of Hillsboro, and happily they shared almost fifty-three years of married life. After graduation from high school he continued his education at McPherson College, Kansas University, Harvard, and Stanford University, and earned the Doctor of Philosophy degree from the latter university.

As a professor of languages he taught in McPherson College, Tabor College, and Redlands University in California After teaching for twenty-eight years at Redlands he officially retired in 1952 but continued for seven more years or a part-time basis, thus serving on the Redlands faculty for thirty-five years.

The active part of his life was halted very suddenly in August of 1859 when he suffered a severe strokes. By God's grace he recovered partially and in January of 1860 we moved to Hillsboro, Kansas, in order to be closer to members of our family. Here we also united in fellowship with the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church. During the last few months, however, he again began to fail in health and last Sunday afternoon, after a visit from the children, he suffered another stroke and was taken to the Salem Hospital later that evening. On Tuesday morning, May 30, 1961, he very quietly and peacefully departed from this life, having reached the age of 77 years, four months, and 10 days.
