Walter Koester Jr., 81, of New Ulm, died Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at his home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Friday, August 10, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 - 7 p.m. Thursday and 7:30 -10:30 a.m. Friday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.

Walter is survived by his wife, Cleo Koester of New Ulm; a daughter, Mary Koester of Apple Valley; sons and daughter-in-law, Russel Koester of New Ulm, Tom and Deb Koester of Courtland; grandchildren, Daniel Koester, Kelley and Dave Gitter, Katie and Jared Rathmann; great-grandson, Trenton Gitter; and by a sister, Joleen Keckstein.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his step-father, Joseph Keckstein.
Walter Jerome Koester was born March 2, 1931 in New Ulm to Walter and Emma (Braunreiter) Koester. He was a 1949 graduate of Holy Trinity High School in New Ulm. Walter was united in marriage to Cleo Harmening on July 13, 1955 in New Ulm. After marriage they lived in New Ulm where Walter was employed at New Ulm Grocery and then 3M until his retirement in 1992.
He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Sioux Valley Gun Club.
