John was the Son of Apostolos Vlachos (who arrived in the port of New York on July 22, 1900 for the first time and stayed with his Brother, Panagiotis in New York) and Maria (maiden name unknown, who immigrated in 1912 to America). Apostolos Vlachos and Maria were married around 1917 (according to the 1930's Census). John was was the Brother of Vasilios and Helen.

John's formative years were mainly spent in Queens, New York where his father had a shoemaking business. In the 1940's Census, John's father is retired. John is shown, however, working in the WPA (the Works Progress Administration), a program of the Roosevelt administration, as a clerk. His Brother, Vasilios, worked in the hospital department and his sister, Helen, worked as a teacher's secretary of the NYA during that time.

John was the loving Husband of the late Barbara Pendergrass Vlachos, Father of Marie Vlachos Weidman (married to Roy Weidman) of Westfield, Pennsylvania, and Father of the late Paul (Apostolos) Charles Vlachos. He was the Grandfather of Stephanie and Austin Weidman

John was a member of the Mount Vernon Order of AHEPA (#370) and served as the Chief Financial Officer of the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Katherine in Falls Church, Virginia for decades. He was a devoted member of that church as well.

The following arrangements for John's funeral were made:

A visitation was held by John's Daughter, Marie, her Husband Roy, and their children on on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home (520 South Washington Street in Alexandria, Virginia). The traditional Greek Orthodox Prayer, the Trisagion, was chanted on the evening of Wednesday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Demaine Funeral Home. After the Trisagion prayers were said, several of the members of John's fraternal order, the AHEPA, spoke, with great affection and respect about John's life and his love of life and other people after a brief AHEPA service was conducted in honor of John.

John's funeral service was held on Thursday, August 16, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. Katherine's Greek Orthodox Church (3149 Glen Carlyn Road in Falls Church, Virginia). The four priests that John had worked with during his tenure at Saint Katherine were present at the Orthodox funeral service conducted. They were Fr. Theodore Chelpon, Fr. George Alexson, Fr. Costas Pavlakos (current Proistamenos) and Fr. Chris Wallace (recently ordained). In addition, Deacon Harry Chelpon served. Fr. Costas Pavlakos gave a eulogy which mentioned John's great love for his family, Church, and the New York Yankees.

John's interment was held at the National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Virginia with all four Priests and the Deacon assisting at John's graveside prayers.

The family of John, after the interment, hosted a luncheon (the Greek term for it is "makaria") in honor of John's memory. A dinner of Greek salad, salmon, baby potatoes, Greek green beans, in addition to a wonderful assortment of mezedakia and Greek pastries was served under the love and care of Charlie Euripides and several of the ladies of the women's group, the Philoptochos. Marie, John's Daughter, thanked persons attending the makaria and for their love and care. Fr. Theodore Chelpon then commented upon the life of John and the loss that is strongly felt with John's death among both his family and the family of Saint Katherine.

A personal note:

Before leaving Saint Kathrine's church grounds on the day of John's funeral, my Daughter and I walked pass what used to be John's office. The office door was closed (which NEVER seemed to be the case when John was alive and present) and had a black bow attached to it. The silence was deafening for me, one who got to know John little by little, during various conversations with him throughout the years at an office that always seemed to have the sounds of life coming from it and to have the door open for others.

May you rest in Peace, dear Brother in Christ.
