Funeral Tuesday For Mrs. Spiecker. Pioneer Mother, Beloved Resident Succumbed Saturday To Long Illness. Death Saturday evening, May 21, terminated a period of two years sickness for Mrs. Maragretha M. Spiecker, 76 and a resident of the community 68 years, who passed away in her home. The prominent Remsen lady's health began to fail in 1947 but it was not until last December when specialists prepared the family for the inevitable.

During her long illness Mrs. Spiecker was given every possible aid and comfort and was given tender and loving care constantly by her only daughter, Thelma.

Born January 29, 1873, at Luzerne, Benton county, Iowa, Margaretha Magdalene was the daughter of Michael and Margaret Scheel who brought their family to Plymouth county in 1881. The Scheel family settled on a Meadow township farm northeast of town and lived there two years. Then they moved to Henry township, farming four more years, and the family came to town in the spring of 1887. The present home of Anna Borm is still recalled by older residents here as "the old Scheel house." It was this house which they built and in which they lived until the family, with the exception of Mrs. Spiecker, moved to California in 1907.

On June 19, 1895, Margaretha Scheel became the bride of Frank Spiecker, another pioneer Remsen farm couple. They were married in the Scheel house by the Rev. Hesse, then pastor of Trinity Lutheran church in Amherst township, Cherokee county.

Mr. Spiecker at the time was cashier of the Farmers Savings bank, now the First Trust & Savings bank, a member of the James F. Toy banking system. He held his position until his death August 15, 1924. Mrs. Spiecker was a lifelong member of the Lutheran faith and took an active part in local church affairs. She was baptized in Luzerne by the Rev. Studt, and confirmed by the Rev. Hesse in 1892. She was a charter member of Christ congregation and of its Ladies Aid and gave generously of her time and material means in their support, while her splendid personality lent also a wholesome influence in her church and social spheres. She was a member of the N. T. and Saturday Night social clubs, composed of lady friends.

Preceding her in death were, besides her husband, her parents, five brothers and two sisters. It was a heartbreaking tragedy in the Scheel family when the diphtheria epidemic of 1885 took the five boys and one girl in a single week. [According to burials in the Remsen Cemetery, it was four boys and one girl who died in 1885.] The second sister, Miss Emma Scheel, passed away here in 1921. The mother died in 1921; the father in 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Scheel are well remembered as leading and highly beloved citizens of this community, as is their family.

Surviving Mrs. Spiecker are three children: Emory H., vice president of the Toy National bank, Sioux City, and president of the First Trust & Savings bank of Remsen; Carl V., hardwareman at Winner, S.D., and Thelma at home. Her brother, Adolph Scheel and her sister, Miss Alma Scheel, live in Long Beach, Calif. Adolph came to Remsen six weeks ago because of his sister's alarm in illness, but Alma was unable to be here because of a recent accidental injury.

The body was at the Moeller funeral home until the time of final services in Christ Lutheran church at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Numerous friends from the surrounding area, notably Sioux City, joined the family in paying last earthly respects. Services were conducted by the pastor, the Rev. A. Noack.

Serving as pall bearers were Wm. G. Sievers, M. H. NIggeling, August Erichsen, Henry Falke, John Maas and Leonard Recknagel. Nine women of the social groups of which Mrs. Spiecker had been a member served as flower bearers. They are: Mrs. Minnie Koch, Mrs. Catherine Galles, Mrs. Anna Groth, Mrs. Elizabeth Neuenschwander, Mrs. Leonard Recknagel, Mrs. Henry Falke, Miss Anna Kallsen, Mrs. Kate Heitman and Mrs. Mary Moeller. Interment was made in the Remsen cemetery.
