From 1960-61, he taught 7th and 8th grade in Girard and worked on the Lubbock newspaper. He taught all subjects plus coaching basketball and drove the school bus. From 1967 until 1978, he was a counselor for Texas Vocational Rehabilitation at Amarillo, Odessa and Midland.

He married Evelyn Meador in Clovis, NM on September 10, 1971. In 1998 he moved to Swink, OK. He had retired from the State of Texas Department of Criminal Justice where he had been employed as a chemical dependency counselor.
