MANCHESTER, Iowa - Martin B. Sandman, 88, of Manchester, died early Sunday morning, Oct. 22, 2000, at Regional Medical Center, Manchester, after a brief illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manchester, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home, Manchester, where there will be a scripture service at 5:30 p.m. The St. Thomas Knights of Columbus #1962 will lead the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Friends also may call after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Mr. Sandman farmed all of his life. He was born on Jan. 3, 1912, in New Vienna, son of Joseph and Celia (Willenborg) Sandman. He married Laurien F. Bergfeld on Jan. 8, 1936, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville; she died on May 30, 1994. They moved to a farm north of Manchester. In 1942, they moved to their farm south of Manchester. He attended school in New Vienna and was a semi-truck driver for Westhoff Trucking for three years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manchester. He was an usher for 30 years, a member of the Manchester St. Thomas Knights of Columbus #1962, of which he was a charter member after 50 years. He helped serve at special dinners at St. Mary's school and enjoyed playing cards, eating out and being with his grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by his children. Surviving are two daughters, Alice (Bob) Soppe and Dianne (Dick ) Foust, both of Manchester; a son, J. Paul (Carolyn) Sandman, of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Engelken, of New Vienna. He also was preceded in death by his parents.
