Abel V. Abbas Succumbs to Long Illness
Abel V. Abbas died in the Lutheran hospital in Hampton Saturday evening following a lingering illness. Mr. Abbas suffered a stroke on May 27, and had lain in a coma since that time. He was 87 years old.
Born in Wymeer, East Friesland, Germany, on August 3, 1869, he was the son of Hemme and Gertrude Vietor Abbas. In 1882, he came to the United States and settled in Grundy county between Grundy Center and Wellsburg.
In 1892, he and Lena Heitland were married and they made their home on farms in this vicinity, later purchasing what became the home place northwest of Ackley, where their son Leo now lives. Mrs. Abbas died June 23, 1931.
Mr. Abbas was the oldest member of the congregation of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church, in age and in years of membership and was always devoted to its interests.
Surviving are nine children: Herman Abbas and Mrs. J. J. Sailer of Hampton; Will of Geneva, Joe of Ackley, George H., Geneva; Henry A., Ackley; Able, Alta Vista; Leo, Ackley; and Harvey, Wellsburg. One son died at the age of two. Also surviving are 39 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Following prayer service for the family at the Fritz Funeral Home, services were held in St. Peter's E. and R. church, Tuesday afternoon. Interment was in the church cemetery. The Rev. R. W. Bizer, officiated at the services.
