Ta Fu was born in China when the country was still ruled by a Manchu Emperor, and he was raised and lived through the Republic Revolution, civil wars and the Japanese invasion. Despite the chaotic environment he pursued successfully his work as a journalist and writer, publishing several books. In 1948 he moved with his wife and then 2 children to Taipei, Taiwan. In Taipei, he continued his career in journalism, teaching and writing, while continuing to publish his poetry. After retirement he moved with his wife to Sacramento in 1985. Ta Fu and his wife, Hsiang Jo, enjoyed retirement traveling around the world while he wrote and published his poetry.
In 2008, a special exhibition of Chinese paintings, calligraphic works and collection of antique books donated by the Shen's was staged at the Shenzhen Museum in China. Ta Fu has also donated books and paintings to the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco and over 100 Universities across the United States, China and Taiwan.
Ta Fu is survived by his wife Hsiang Jo, sons George Shen, Michael Shen, Tony Shen, Charlie Shen and his daughter Jenny Boesch as well as 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Ta Fu will be held on Friday 31 Aug 2012 from 5-8 pm at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary located at 9189 E. Stockton Blvd.
Funeral services will be held Saturday 1 Sep 2012 at 11 am at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary Chapel followed by burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery located at 7100 Verner Ave, Sacrameto.
