John Deters, 88, one of the
pioneers of Plymouth county, died
at his farm home in Stanton township
Wednesday, October 1, after a
lingering illness.
Born in Oldenburg, Germany,
March 21, 1853, John Deters came
to America when eighteen years old
and on arrival came west and lived
at Petersburg, Iowa, two years and
then came to Le Mars and settled on
land in Stanton 'township and lived
on the s a m e farm ever since.
He was a successful farmer and
stock raiser and was highly respected
in the community.
He was a devout member of the
Catholic church and a member of the
Holy Name society of St. Joseph's
church.
He was married to Caroline
Meinen at Petersburg, May 28, 1877.
His wife, one daughter, Mrs. Anna
Freking, and a son, Frank, preceded
him in death and four children died
in infancy.
He is survived by his children,
Mrs. Frank Harpenau and Mrs.
Theresa Ruethler of Le Mars; Mrs.
Elizabeth Puthoff, Humboldt, S. D.;
Sister Fabian, Mercy hospital,
Waverly, Iowa, William Deters and
Mrs. Jos. Kolbeck, Salem, S. D.;
Josephine, Tony and John, at home,
forty-six grandchildren and forty
eight great grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Friday,
October 3, at 9:30 o'clock in St.
Joseph's church. "Rev. Father Leo
Harpenau, a grandson, will conduct
the mass.
Six grandsons will act as pallbearers,
Gregory Freking, Aloysius Harp
enau, Henry Ruether, Joseph Deters,
Emil Puthoff and Raymond Kolbeck
Wiltgen's funeral home is in
charge of arrangements.
