Ernest was the son of Emil and Johanna Nehls and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1927. He married Helen Langhorst in Sidney, Ohio. He was co-owner along with his son Donald of the Nehls Refrigeration Company. He was survived by Donald, a daughter Mrs. James (Karen) DeJean of Mount Clemens, and his mother Johanna Carl of Mount Clemens and six grandchildren. He was also survived by his brothers and sisters, John, Fred and Elizabeth Kursteiner, all of Mount Clemens. He was predeceased by a sister, Mrs. James (Helen) Ward.
