COOPERSTOWN _ Michael (Mike) G. Kaplan, 55, died Wednesday morning, May 12, 2010, at his home.

Mike was born Jan. 29, 1955, in Nyack, a son of the late Milton Kaplan and Patricia Kelley Kaplan.

After graduating from Nyack High School, Mike attended SUNY Cortland for one year and then started what would become a 30-year career in telecommunications. He started as a Cord Board Operator with Ma Bell and later worked as a TSPS Operator with New York Tel. He was then promoted to switchman and was employed in Syracuse where he worked on comp uters with NYNEX. In 1994, Mike transferred to Cooperstown and was employed as a central office technician with Verizon. During his career, he was a CWA Union Steward.

On May 18, 1985, Mike married Leslie K. Copeland in Rye Brook. They enjoyed 25 years of marriage.

When the Kaplans first moved to the Cooperstown area, they lived on Fork Shop Road in the Stocking Homestead and later moved to their home on Bristol Road in the Town Otsego, where Mike always enjoyed working around the house. He loved spending time with his family and taking trips to Lake George, as well as discussing politics and history and rescuing animals. An avid reader, he also enjoyed music, playing the drums and dancing, his Buick Roadmaster, as well as woodworking and framing maps. Mike truly enjoyed life, and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A Born-Again Christian, Mike was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Hyde Park, and possessed a firm belief that Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior.

Mike is survived by his wife of 25 years, Leslie of Cooperstown; five children, Sara Kwiecien of Pennsylvania, Krystal Kaplan of New York City, Jesse Kaplan of New Jersey, and Marissa Kaplan and Andrew Kaplan, both of Cooperstown; and one granddaughter, Alexandra Kwiecien. Mike is also survived by Supo and Patricia Ladipo of Nigeria, Dr. Alex and Ellen Hsieh of Vermont, Mara Cicaloni of Vermont, James Kaplan of Saratoga Springs, John and Lydia Kaplan of Hopewell Junction, Patricia Torres of White Plains, Jackie Copeland of Rye; 17 nieces and nephews; and many cousins.

A funeral service will be offered at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2010, at the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home, 82 Chestnut Street, Cooperstown, with the Rev. Michael Glisson, pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Hyde Park, officiating. Burial will follow in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Mike's family suggests that memorial donations be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are with the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown.
