Obituary
Jantje (Jeanette) Groen, daughter of Peter and Altjie De Geest, was born at Pella, Iowa, January 1st, 1858 and died at Corsica, South Dakota, March 26, 1930, aged 72 years, 2 months, 26 days. She is survived by her aged husband and six children, five brothers and one sister. The children are Anna Doscher of Rapid City, S. D.; Ollie Sullivan of Miller, S. D.; Margaret Heezen of Plankinton, S. D.; John and Cleve Groen of Corsica, S. D.; and Peter Groen of Armour, S. D. Brothers are Jasper De Geest of California; Henry De Geest of Washington state; Elijah De Geest of Rapid City, S. D.; Peter De Geest of Armour, S. D.; Alexander De Geest of Pella, Iowa. The one sister is Elizabeth Heezen of Armour, S. D. All of her children, with the exception of Mrs. Dosher, who was detained by illness, were at her bedside when she passed away. There are also 18 grand-children and five great-grandchildren.
She was married to Peter Groen at Orange City, Iowa, January 24, 1881. In April 1882, they moved to a homestead one mile west of Harrison, S. Dak., residing there until 1895, when the family moved to a farm in Garfield Township, where they resided until 1925, when they moved to Corsica, which has since been their home.
She became a member of the First Reformed church of Harrison soon after coming to South Dakota, later transferring her membership to the Grace Reformed church of Corsica where she has remained a faithful member.
On account of the prevalent communicable diseases no funeral services were held at the church but a short service conducted by Rev. Wm. Duven was held at the home. She was laid to rest in Graceland cemetery.
Those who were present from out-of-town in attendance at the funeral services were: Cornelius Groen, Mrs. Mary Westra and son, Orange City, Iowa; Mrs. Jane Vander Poel, Rock Valley, Iowa; Mrs. Gertrude Van Groningen, Alton, Iowa, brothers and sisters of Mr. Groen; Mrs. Mina Brummel and sons, Cornelius Meyer of Mitchell; Elijah De Geest and son, Jasper, Rapid City, S.D.; Alexander De Geest, Pella Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Geest, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Heezen, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Doscher, Armour; Mr. and Mrs. John Beaty, Mrs. Arie De Geest, Mrs. Josie Wilson, Mrs. Ollie Sullivan, Miller, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. John Heezen, Plankinton, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. John Jongewaard, Hurley, S. D. and others who names we did not get.
