MAJOR E. WELCH

The Deadwood Times says of Major E. Welch, who died at that place on Tuesday last:

Born in Hillsdale, Michigan, in June, 1838 he resided at or near that place until the breaking out of the war in 1861, when he went into government service, and there remained until it's close, securing position as post-trader at Fort Randall, under President Johnson's appointment; afterwards at Fort McPherson and Camp Sheridan in the same position, which he held until about a year ago, when he removed to the Hills, investing here largely, as it is well known, in very many instances. He was also largely invested in stock upon the Laramie plains.

There is probably not an individual in the Black Hills at this time whose taking off will be felt as keenly as that of Major Welch. He came here not a stranger, but comparatively so, and today it would be difficult matter, indeed as impossibility, to find an enemy or any one who could speak aught against him, and his friends are legion. As a public-sighted man there was not his equal, and he was generous to a fault.

The following was contributed by Karla Weber and Mike Runge;

Apparently this family owned the Welch Hotel and Mrs. Lizzie Welch died in January, then her husband in April and then his brother Judson came out to bury his brother and he died a week later in Spearfish in 1878.

In that interview he states that he states that he was appointed post-trader to Fort McPherson on April 25, 1871. He also said he had been with the Army for eleven years. Prior to that he had been in the sulter business (privately providing merchandise to the military). He also said he had resided in Iowa City, Iowa prior to the war.

Edward G. Welch
