Betty Irene Baker, of Fallowfield Township, passed away on Saturday, June 30, 2012 leaving behind a loving family and a lifetime of memories. She was born in Charleroi on January 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Vernon and Ann Oleksak Balmer. She was a 1939 graduate of Charleroi High School, followed by graduating from Douglas Business College. She served in the United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve during World War II, attaining the rank of Sergeant. Upon leaving the service she worked as a teller at Mellon Bank, where she met her life-long love, Harold Baker: they celebrated 63 years of happiness until his death in 2010. She was also employed at Creditors Adjustment Bureau in Charleroi, and then became a staff employee in the area of student loans at California University of PA. She was a member of the Athene Club of Charleroi, an associate member of Mon-Vale Health Resources Auxiliary, a member of Mary, Mother of the Church of Charleroi all of her life, and the American Legion Post#22 of Charleroi. Anyone who met her remembered her for her love of current events and her ability to carry on a scintillating debate, no matter what the subject. She is survived by her two sons, Bruce Baker and his wife Valerie and Barry Baker and his wife Peggy, both of whom were happy to live next door in "Baker's Acres" in Fallowfield Township; five grandchildren Jennifer Wilson (Ivan) of Charlotte, N.C., Justin Baker (Devaki) of Ashburn, VA., Graham Baker (Christine) of Youngwood, Katelyn DiPiazza (Derek) of Germantown, MD., and Molly Baker (Jon) of Roanoke, VA., a niece, Anne Schempp (Pete) of Donora; four great-grandchildren Ivan and Eva Wilson and Max and Owen Baker. In addition to her parents and her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her sister Gladys Balmer Schempp. Friends will be received Thursday July5th from 10a.m. to 11:30a.m. in the Schrock-Hogan Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc., 226 Fallowfield Ave., Charleroi, followed by a mass of Christian Burial at noon in Mary, Mother of the Church, 7th and Washington Ave., in Charleroi.
