Diana C. Pierce
Diana Cameron Pierce, beloved wife, mother, friend and longtime Marblehead resident, died April 21, 2008, after a long illness resulting from a brain tumor.
Born December 22, 1931, in Boston, she grew up in Milton, graduating from Milton Academy in 1949. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wellesley College in 1953, where she served as head of house for her dormitory.
Following her Wellesley graduation, she pursued advanced studies in elementary school education at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge.
Mrs. Pierce's first teaching position as a kindergarten teacher at the Tower School brought her to Marblehead in the mid-1950s. The job was a perfect fit given her natural gifts – her love of children, her ability to work with and draw them out, and her delight in their accomplishments.
She married Laurence Pierce on June 27, 1959. They had five children, three daughters and two sons, one of who was born with a genetic disease, which includes blindness. Mrs. Pierce devoted tireless hours to understanding his disabilities and assisting with his schoolwork, through the attainment of his college degree.
An avid bird watcher and gardener, she supported numerous conservancy and nature-related causes throughout her life. She was a generous contributor to Audubon and Habit for Humanity, among many other charities. She and a Wellesley daughter contributed a memorial garden to the Horticultural Center at Wellesley College in honor of her mother, with whom she shared her love of plants and flowers. Inspired by her own and one of her daughter's experience, she endowed a birthing room at Salem Hospital, where they had each delivered five children.
Mrs. Pierce was also a devoted member of the St. Michael's Bereavement Support Group, which met regularly to help others cope with the loss of a loved one or with various life challenges. A wonderful and compassionate listener, Mrs. Pierce cherished opportunities such as these for conversation and friendship.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Laurence Pierce; three daughters and sons-in law, Hilary Jackson of Darien, Conn. and her husband, Chuck, Susanna Pratt of Marblehead and her husband, Daniel, and Sarah Levy of Harpswell, Maine and her husband, Adam; her son, Timothy Pierce of Marblehead; her sister, Elizabeth Shepherd of St. James, N.Y.; and nine grandchildren, Benjamin, Diana, Emily, Emma, Henry, Jonah, Olivia, Sam and William.
She was predeceased by her infant son, Robin Bruce Pierce.
