Maria Saint was born at Knightstown, Ind., Nov. 5, 1831, and passed to the celestial home from the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. D. Wilcox, Moore’s Hill, Ind., June 11 1915. She was married to the Rev. John O’Neal, Oct. 16, 1850. To this happy union were born four sons and two daughters. One son and one daughter, C. E. and Mrs. Allie Manchester, are in the Fatherland with their parents. Those living are Watson P. O’Neal, of Richmond, Ind.; John E. O’Neal, of St. Louis; Belton S. O’Neal, of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Elsie Wilcox, of Moore's Hill, Ind. The remains of the mother were laid by the husband’s side in the lovely cemetery at Greenville, Pa., where he had one of his most successful pastorates. She had been in frail health for several years, and for almost two years was confined to her bed. Tenderly and lovingly was she cared for in the home of her daughter, where she passed the twilight hours, making it like some golden summer evening. The crowning glory of life seemed to flame out in those last days. Her helplessness was turned into joyous, victorious faith. Old age found in her no winter. While along the journey life had its beautiful and mighty forces spending themselves to make the charges where she and her husband toiled more like the Master they honored and loved, yet her last days had a sweetness, fullness and ripeness that charmed the angels to give her an abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. My knowledge of the O’Neals dates back to 1863, when my father was pastor in Chagrin Falls, O., and the Rev. John O’Neal served the Congregational Church. I heard him preach a sermon I recall to this day, that marked the ability of a strong, evangelical minister. His subsequent career in the Erie Conference proved him to be a very successful minister, pastor a evangelist. Silent witness of the gospel in the home life, her influence for good was quite 'as marked as his. Standing now by quiet resting-place I ask of the troops of children and young people of the weary home toilers, of burdened men, of the despondent a careworn, of the sick, of the faltering steps of age—what of this woman? and back comes the response: “She was God’s angel mercy, comfort and love, making life more beautiful and hopeful. Her life was a vision of the Christ. Life reached beyond earth’s horizon; heaven and earth were made to blend, and life was worth the living and merged into the immortal.
