Author. Born Francis Richard Stockton in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when he began to have his works published he elected to have them under the more informal “Frank R. Stockton.” His father, a Methodist minister and writer, had hoped that his son would become a doctor, but, upon graduating Philadelphia Central High School, he began working as a wood engraver and proved good enough to have some of his illustrations published. A devote of fantasy stories of dwarves and giants, he frequently wrote fairy tales, with his first work, “Ting-a-Ling Tales”, being published in “Riverside Magazine for Young People” in 1867. Taking up journalism, he worked on the staff of several magazines and was assistant editor of “St. Nicholas”, a children’s magazine founded in 1873. He also wrote for an adult audience, and his most famous short story being “The Lady or the Tiger?” which is a standard in American anthologies of literature.
