COOPERSTOWN, NY — Robert R. Winter, 71, of Cooperstown, died Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 24, 1997 at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1926 in the Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, a son of Louis and Mary (Kearns) Winter.

He was married to Therese J. Sawicki on May 19, 1951 at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Queens.

Robert grew up in New York City and graduated from Richmond Hill High School in Queens. After graduation, he was drafted and served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He then went on to become a New York City policeman and retired from the force as a lieutenant on April 8, 1969. During his years in law enforcement, he attended the John Jay College of Criminal Law and the Delahanty Institute in Queens. In 1976, Robert and his wife moved from Plainview, Long Island to Cooperstown, where they made their home for the past 21 years.

A school bus driver for the Cooperstown Central School for 13 years, Robert was also a talented musician, having played the trombone in the 7th Regiment Armory Band and the New York City Police Band and Orchestra.

He was a member of St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown, the Retired Lieutenants' Benevolent Association, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Robert is survived by his wife of 46 years, Therese, of Cooperstown; one daughter and son-in-law, Doreen and Joseph Branca of Garden City, Long Island; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Gerard and Kimberly Winter of Syracuse, John Winter of Buffalo, Brian and Ann Winter of Wantagh, Long Island and Thomas and Kristin Winter of Chatham, N.J.; one brother-in-law, Brother Henry Sawicki, F.M.S. of Esopus; nine grandchildren, Matthew and Christine Winter of Syracuse, Caitlin, Gregory and Thomas Branca of Garden City, Long Island, Kevin and Kathryn Winter of Wantagh, Long Island, and Andrew and Mark Winter of Chatham, N.J.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, 1997 at St. Mary's Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Cooperstown with the Rev. John R. Roos, pastor, officiating. Interment will be at a later date in St. Mary's Cemetery in Index.

Friends are invited to call at the Connell, Dow and Deysenroth Funeral Home in Cooperstown on Sunday evening, Dec. 28, 1997 from 7-9 p.m. when Robert's family will be in attendance.
