(There is discrepant info for the marriage of John and Elise. His obit lists it as 1879 and her obit lists it as 1880. I have a photo of their 60th wedding anniversary party and that was in 1940 so I (Susan K Burgess) list their marriage date as 1880. There is also discrepant info on John's birthplace. Most records list it as Fond du Lac but the 1905 South Dakota State Census lists it as Herman, Dodge County, Wisconsin.)

John Ebert was born the 8th of September, 1858 in Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin the fifth child of Daniel and Catherine Ebert. (He may have been born in Herman, Dodge County, Wisconsin.) John grew to manhood in Fond du Lac and then traveled to Willmar, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota to work on the railroad. He married Elise Gulbrandsen Bremmon the 16th of May, 1879 or 1880 in Willmar, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, USA. They made their home in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota then later moved back to Willmar and then to Iroquois, Kingsbury County, South Dakota, in 1886. In 1893 they moved east of Britton, Marshall County, South Dakota. Then in 1897 they moved into Britton where they remained until their deaths.

John was a short heavy-set man who worked as an engineer on the railroad. He was fired and black-balled by the railroad when he tried to start a union. He worked as a marshal for the town of Britton as well as an engineer at the Britton Mill, a janitor at the courthouse, a fireman and a night watchman.

John and Elise had five children: Jennie, Roy, Arthur, Paul and Leon. They also raised John's nephew, William Ebert, from the time he was about eleven years old. Known as Bill Ebert, he was born the 5th of April, 1885 in Highmore, Hyde County, South Dakota. According to Evelyn Vold, he was the son of one of John Ebert's sisters. He was left an orphan when quite young. The people he lived with were unkind so, he ran away and came to the home of John and Elise when he was about ten years old. According to Lorraine Morris, Bill was the last of the children to leave John and Elise's home.

Being in poor health for some time Elise suffered a heart attack and died the 30th of June, 1941 in Britton, Marshall County, South Dakota. Their great-grandaughter, Evelyn Nelson (later Vold) cared for John until his death from heart trouble the 10th of August, 1941 in Britton, Marshall County, South Dakota, USA just forty days after Elise. They are both buried in Britton.
