Mildred M. Smrkovski - age 107, of Pocahontas, Iowa, died February 22, 2021 at the Pocahontas Manor Nursing home after residing there since February 6, 2013.
Mildred Margaret Smrkovski was born September 29, 1913 near Laurens, Iowa. She was the daughter of Edward and Helen (Blondil) Hanisch Sr. She attended rural school and graduated from Laurens High School in 1931. She attended Cedar Falls Teachers College and taught 6 years in Roosevelt Twp. She Married Vern Smrkovski June 1, 1938. They had 3 sons, Jim, twins Lloyd and Lonnie. They farmed north of Pocahontas for 14 years. They purchased a farm near Grand Meadow Minnesota in 1952 where they farmed for 25 years.
Mildred attended Winona State Teachers College for 3 years and received her Elementary degree in 1966. She taught for 5 years in Catholic School in Adams, MN and 1 year in Elkton, MN public schools.
Vern and Mildred moved back to Pocahontas, Iowa in 1978. Here she did part time teaching in the public and Catholic schools. She was an active member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church until it was closed and deemed a History Site. She remained active with Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church. She was a member of the Rosary Society, CD of A Foresters, Missionary Society, Senior Citizens Bridge Club, and the Phoenix Club, She was also Residential Care Center secretary. Her hobbies were crossword puzzles, scrabble, solitaire and was an avid reader and gardener.
Mildred is survived by sons, Jim in Minnesota, Lloyd (Judy) in New Hampshire, Lonnie (Cheryl) in Michigan, 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, Preceded in death are brothers Melvin, Frank, Emil, Arnold, Edward, Laurence, Cecil, and sisters Florence (Cihlar), Ann (Bond), Mary (Reindal) and Clare (Waldron).
