This listing is taken from a compilation done by Louis Menks, with the assistance of Msg. Joseph A. Vogelweid, prior to June 1940. The record is on file at the Missouri State Archives.

The birth year in the compilation is given as 1815, however the date on the tombstone appears to be 1845. We are choosing to go with the later date. If anyone has proof to the contrary, please let me know.

I believe this is the gravestone for my gggrandfather's Johannes (John) Hartman(n)'s first wife, Maria Cleopha Staempfle. They travelled together from Switzerland in 1854 on the ship Roger Stewart from Le Havre, France, to New Orleans, Louisiana, when John was 14 and Maria was 9. (Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New Orleans, Louisiana, 1820-1902; Series: M259; Roll #: 40) I don't know if they knew each other on the ship, but both ended up in Jefferson City, Missouri, and got married in Jeff City on 10 April 1866. Maria died a year later, I assume in childbirth. John married again in 1871, this time to Mary Gertrude Kolkmeyer, in the same church by the same pastor. (Date entry from St Peter Marriage records, on microfilm at Archives in Jefferson City, Missouri.)
