Frank Xavier Stopper was born on 13 Nov. 1858 in Ergenzingen, Schwarzwaldkreis, Wurttemberg, Germany. He was the 16th of 17 children born to Clara (Baur) and Leonard Stopper.

At the age of 21, Frank left Germany for America. He traveled aboard the "Allemannia" and arrived at the port of New York on 21 Sept. 1880. He then traveled to and settled in, La Porte Co., Ind. In 1888 Frank became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

In La Porte Frank met and married Katherine Schellhammer. They were married on 11 Jan. 1887 by Father Joseph Nussbaum.

Frank and Katherine had 8 children, Eleanora Barbara "Ellen", and her twin, Clara Librina, Mary Katherine, Anton Leonard "Leo", Rosina Francisca "Rosie", Carl Herman, Veronica Cecilia "Fronie" and Lawrence Vincent. All were born in La Porte except Lawrence. Unfortunately, Clara Librina and Mary Katherine died in infancy.

By 1900 the family moved from La Porte Co. to the neighboring Ind. county of St. Joseph. They resided first in Mishawaka, but finally settled in So. Bend, residing as 1013 Oakland street.

In Germany, Frank was a shoemaker, but he was not able to earn a living as a cobbler in America, so he got a job as a machinist. However, he continued to use his cobbler skills by making shoes for his family.

Frank Xavier Stopper died in his home on 15 Aug. 1930 of tuberculosis.
