Memorial Update:

The Iowa Donor Network honored two Iowans who gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donations in the 2023 Tournament of Roses Parade held January 2, 2023, in Pasadena, California.

Amanda Wilken of West Des Moines and Emily Bohnsack of Wilton, were both honored on the 2023 Donate Life Rose Parade float, which is part of a national campaign to help share the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. Amanda Wilken passed away in 2018, due to a car crash. Her gifts of tissue donations have helped 251 people. Emily Bohnsack passed away in 2010, also due to a car crash. Her gifts of tissue donations have helped 226 people.

Both the Wilken and Bohnsack families flew to Pasadena to help decorate the float with the likeness of their daughters using flower and seeds and were then invited to watch the parade. The judges awarded the prizes to the floats before the start of the parade. Donate Life America entry float, "Lifting Each Other Up!" won the Sweepstakes Award as the most beautiful entry float design and floral presentation. The float, a Chinese street dragon, which symbolize great power, strength and good luck, featured 40,000 flowers. Displayed along both sides of the dragon's body were memorial floral portraits honoring the donors to include both Amanda Wilken and Emily Bohnsack. There were 18 organ, eye and tissue recipients seated on the float, along with eight living donors.
