William "Bill" Alfred Gittinger, of Port Clinton, died peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, in Stein Hospice in Sandusky.

He was born Dec. 7, 1931, in Toledo. Bill's most fulfilling enjoyment came from his landscaping passion. He spent uncounted hours being in the outdoors and working in the yard. Additionally, as a young man he enjoyed flying as a commercial airline pilot and ultimately working at Cleveland Airport for the FAA as an air traffic controller. In his later years, after moving back to his hometown of Port Clinton, he was employed by Uniroyal and USCO.

After retirement he enjoyed numerous trips and vacations around the country. He will certainly be remembered by those who loved him for his joyful attitude and smile. He embraced life in a special way, as the many friends he has left behind can attest to.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Gittinger, of Lakeside, on Oct. 11, 2008.

Surviving him are his three children, Laurie Gittinger, of South Carolina, Theresa Uhinck (Matthew) Uhinck, of Port Clinton and Scott Gittinger and his special friend Thomas Williamson, of Beaumont, Texas. He had two grandchildren, Megan Uhinck, of Lakeside, and Eric Uhinck, of Huntsville, Ala. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Kozlowski, of Toledo, and Beverly (Earl) Saunders, of Michigan. Bill's greatest new joy was his great-granddaughter, Kailynn Elizabeth.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Gerner-Wolf-Walker Funeral Home & Crematory, Port Clinton, where funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Bill can be made to the Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department or Stein Hospice.
