William R. Schmidt, 63, of 1330 Dakota Drive, Elgin, died Friday in Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Dundee, the son of William and Amalia Kind Schmidt, and had lived in Elgin most of his life. He had been employed by the Elgin post office as a mail carrier and later as a clerk, before retiring three years ago. He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and VFW Post 1307 both of Elgin. He had served in the Army during World War 2. Surviving are one son, William J. of Elgin, one daughter, Lauren K. Muetze of Batavia, two stepsons, Leonard Busche of Elgin and Leon Busche of Germantown, Md., one brother, Rheinhold Schmidt of Elgin, and a sister, Laura Enghausen, with whom he resided, and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda, and his parents. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Schmidt funeral home, Elgin, the Rev. Charles Austin officiating.
