Bio

A deep interest in, and a family connection to, the tragic events of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 has led me to memorialize some of the victims of the conflict, whether of European, Indian or mixed origin. I am focusing on cemeteries and memorials in Cawnpore, modern-day Kanpur.

This is an overwhelming project, for various reasons. Original sources are conflicting and fragmentary – to be expected at a time of such turmoil and destruction. Few eyewitnesses survived to tell their stories. The final resting places of most of the victims are unknown. I am ignorant of the Hindi language, and live far from India and from libraries which contain specialized reference works.

And most of all, I can only dedicate very limited time and energy to research and to the compilation of short biographies.

This effort will proceed gradually, as I attempt to learn more, to make corrections of (doubtless many) mistakes, and to enter the names and family relationships of more of those who perished during the conflict.

I welcome and appreciate any corrections, additions or suggestions in this task, though it may take awhile for me to respond to them.

Thank you for your interest, and for caring about those who strove and suffered in a very different time and place, though not so very long ago.

Humbling how life intervenes in unexpected ways. I see several messages here I have not responded to, and I apologize. I was stricken with very serious cancer in 2013, and am glad to say that after several surgeries and some of the most rigorous chemotherapy out there, I am definitely on the mend. I have very little stamina at this point - can't accomplish much and of course all the other neglected issues have crowded in to fill what time I have. I appreciate your interest, and will at least work over the next few weeks to ensure that I have answered comments. Ongoing research has been shelved for the time being.

THANK YOU for your kind words and concern, and for a few additions to this project, most interestingly the wonderful image of Isabella Georgina White! No sign of cancer, my strength continues to improve, and things are going well as I try to catch up on two years of neglected projects and business!
