I was born and raised in Indianapolis. Besides documenting my mother's large Irish family who were early settlers in central Indiana, I have become committed to expanding the historical records of Holy Cross Cemetery in Indianapolis, as the place where most of them are buried. Many poor Irish who were buried in its consecrated ground, as they had to be by Catholic doctrine of the time, could not afford either a burial plot or marker. In many cases, their children or grandchildren, having grown more prosperous, purchased plots and erected markers not only for themselves, but retroactively for the grandparents and great-grandparents, and their other relations. My project is to create memorials for those who are, often, missing from the official records but are indeed resting in Holy Cross, so that future generations will know and appreciate what they accomplished.
