Linden Cemetery
Also known as Linden Grove Cemetery
Linden, San Joaquin County, California, USA
Located in the rural farming town of Linden, Douglas Township, San Joaquin County, California, about twelve miles East of the city of Stockton— (Note: Stockton is the only inland port in the state of California and is more than seventy nautical miles from the Pacific Ocean.) This port and the rural community of Linden were a major connection to the gold fields and gold prospecting towns to the East. Linden is on Hwy 26 (Aka Highway 8/Linden Road).
It is thought that the cemetery was started about 1850 and was known as the Linden Grove Cemetery. The Linden Cemetery Association was incorporated on Feb 23, 1877 and has operated de facto. Articles of Incorporation, on March 10, 1877, were signed. The newer part of the cemetery was started on August 26, 1877, formerly the Ashley Family property.
On Decoration Day (Memorial Day), in 1934, the committee voted to hold its annual meeting at this time at the cemetery. This tradition continues to this day (2022) and can be attended by the public.
In 1964, members of the San Joaquin Genealogical Society of Stockton, California, completed the Old Cemeteries of San Joaquin County California, Volume III, which includes this cemetery—see page 21 & page 94 of that volume. The record in these volumes record the earliest known graves including those through the year 1920. The book was reprinted in 1994.
Over the years the cemetery committee has replaced some of the original wooden markers as well as repaired some of the deteriorated stone markers. There still are missing headstones due to the age of the cemetery and the knowledge of the older interned. (1850-1920)
In 1968, a survey of the cemetery and the completion of a map with a new record book were done by Mr. & Mrs. Alling Davis.
The above history was gathered from the Stockton San Joaquin Genealogical Society and several deceased historians: Mr. Perry Cox, former Linden Cemetery Superintendent; Mrs. Louise Lemmon's history of the cemetery which was published in the book: "From Stage Stop to Friendly Community, A History of Linden," 1976, compiled and edited by Don R. Smith, Linden Publications.
Volunteers are continually updating the cemetery information of the honored intern.
